Great Lakes, Great Invaders
The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is the largest museum in Canada, receiving over 1.25 million visitors each year. Being in an excellent position to bridge the gap between the scientific community and members of the general public, ROM partnered with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) in an effort to spread the word on invasive carps which pose a serious threat to Ontario’s aquatic ecosystems. As the public plays a critical role in preventing the spread of their habitat range, the museum required informative video content to engage their audience.
This project consisted of two videos, both of which Sofia directed, filmed, and edited.
Firstly, a short 2-minute video to raise awareness about the threat that invasive carps pose to Ontario’s aquatic ecosystems and inviting the public to get involved in the conservation efforts. This video will be on display at the ROM’s Hands-on Biodiversity gallery.
Secondly, a longer documentary style video highlighting the research and mitigation strategies being conducted by DFO, scientists, and conservation authorities, as well as what the public can do to help. This video is featured on ROM’s Youtube channel.
With the help of informed and inspired citizens, the chances of successfully managing invasive species is significantly increased. Through their participation, they can contribute to the promotion of healthy ecosystems.
