My name is Sofia (she/her), and I am a Mexican documentarian and visual storyteller based near Toronto, Ontario. Growing up watching documentaries opened my eyes to the realities of the world, instilling in me a profound appreciation for Earth’s wonders and a devoted sense of social justice. It is no surprise that with my background in science and visual communication, I naturally gravitated toward documentary filmmaking.
I initially studied marine biology with the intention of working in conservation. I understood the vital role our oceans play in today’s climate crisis and felt called to be part of the solution. But along the way, I realized that science alone isn’t enough to create meaningful change. Without public education, empathy, and emotional connection, facts often fall short. That’s when I began to understand the transformative power of stories. I truly believe they are one of the most powerful tools we possess to foster empathy, ignite movements, and drive action, a belief that guides my mission as a storyteller.
My work lives at the intersection of social and environmental justice, art, and storytelling. Through the powerful medium of documentaries, I aspire to contribute to the global effort to safeguard our planet’s ecological and cultural heritage, bringing attention to urgent issues while inspiring hope and nurturing in audiences a sense of purpose grounded in collective action.
Today, I primarily work as a documentary editor while continuing to explore and develop my skills in cinematography, directing, and producing. I’m open to collaborating on short, feature-length, or branded documentary projects, as well as scripted narrative and commercial work. Above all, I remain devoted to the power of story as a force for justice, connection, and change.
